The Department of Engineering Section for Mechanical Engineering at Aarhus University, Denmark, has an open position as Associate Professor in Renewable Energy Systems Engineering and Thermodynamics.

The position is available from February 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Renewable Energy Systems group focuses their research on identifying key aspects of future energy systems based on renewable energy. In recent years, the group has pioneered a novel research methodology dubbed weather-driven modeling. The methodology revolves around deriving robust and fundamental aspects of the interactions between key technologies, e.g., wind, solar, transmission and storage to guide society’s transition to a new sustainable energy infrastructure based on renewables. The current research focus is on cross-sector coupling, the transition from conventional to renewable based energy systems, the effects of climate change on the energy system and on future energy markets.

The Department is looking for an Associate Professor who is able to continue and expand the current work on energy system engineering and handle applied aspects, in particular in relation to district heating, energy storage and conversion technologies.

Research profile
The applicant is expected to conduct applied research in the field of renewable energy system engineering. Of particular importance is experience with so-called weather-driven modeling, modeling and validation of wind and solar energy generation, energy transmission systems at both continental and distribution scale, cross-sector coupling of heat, power and gas infrastructure, system integration of energy storage, and a good working knowledge of various energy technologies, e.g., combined heat and power and district heating.

The applicant must hold a PhD degree in Engineering or Science and is expected to have 4 years of post-graduate research experience in the field of Renewable Energy System Engineering. Experience with research leadership, and the ability to define and manage research projects is an advantage as is a successful record of external research funding. The candidate must document a rising publication and citation record evidenced by appropriate bibliometric parameters in high-ranking journals, including but not limited to energy related journals. The ability to bring the research results into the public domain is a must, and strong communication skills (in English and Danish) are a clear advantage.

The research will be conducted through projects with external partners. Thus, experience from successful research collaboration with academia, public and private partners is preferred. A preexisting and growing international and Danish research network is expected from a successful applicant. The ability to conduct interdisciplinary research in collaboration with colleagues from other departments of the university will be seen as a plus.

The applicant will be required to supervise master and Ph.D. students, manage research projects and attract external research funding.

Teaching responsibilities
The applicant must have completed an up-to-date university teaching program and is expected to have experience with lectures, classroom teaching and supervision of individual research-based student projects at the M.Sc. level.

The applicant will be required to teach existing mechanical engineering related courses in thermodynamics and turbomachinery. These courses include some experimental elements. The applicant is expected to develop new, specialized course offerings within his/her field of specialty in the departments M.Sc. program as well as in an upcoming B.Sc. program and possibly PhD courses.
