Two-year post doctorate for Investigation of Lignin materials applications at Department of Engineering, Aarhus University.

Applications are invited for a two-year post doctorate position at Department of Engineering, Science and Technology, Aarhus University, within the Engineering programme. The position is available from 1, November 2017.

Research area and project description

This position is part of a larger project entitled “High Value products from Lignin”. The overall goal of this project is to transform lignin, which is an abundant side stream product from Nordic forest based industries, into high value materials for specialized applications pertaining to biogas reforming and protective coatings for metals.

The project will focus on developing novel chemical tools to engineer the physico chemical properties of lignin for various application areas. The project main activities would include functional group transformation, physico chemical characterization, surface modification, surface characterization and demonstration of the prepared material in the aforementioned application areas.

Qualifications and specific competences

The successful applicant must have a relevant PhD degree in chemistry/ polymer chemistry/ surface chemistry chemical engineering with specialization in polymer chemistry. Prior research experience in lignin  is considered advantage. The successful candidate has excellent technical knowledge in one or more topics – Biopolymers modification and characterization, surface modification and characterization tools. Other attributes being high motivation to learn new techniques and contribute constructively to the project, written and oral proficiency in English and good interactions with fellow colleagues and other research teams/collaborators is also a part of this job profile.

The tasks will be:

1. Design and execution of scientific work within the project including reporting in scientific publications
2. Management activities in collaboration with the partners 
3. Contribute to the development of an interdisciplinary environment

Application procedure
Short-listing is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range

Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
