Speaker: PhD Stefano Donadio, CEO and founder of Naicons

Info about event

Time

Tuesday 29 October 2019,  at 14:15 - 15:15

During the coming months we are hosting a series of invited lectures related to the Discovery of new antibiotics.

The first speaker is PhD Stefano Donadio, CEO and founder of Naicons. His lecture will be in the iNANO auditorium on Tuesday the 29th of October at 14:15.

The title of his talk is:

Scientific and economic challenges in the discovery and development of new antibiotics

Abstract:
The increasing and widespread emergence of multi-drug resistant bacterial pathogens calls for multiple strategies to tackle this serious threat, including the development of new antibiotics not affected by existing resistance mechanisms. Despite heavy investments, no effective technology is available to discover promising antibacterial scaffolds, with natural products, especially those of microbial origin, still representing a major source of approved drugs and of new scaffolds. However, discovery of new antibiotics from nature remains challenging. Furthermore, the current economic and regulatory scenario does not encourage the development of new treatments for bacterial infections and most major pharmaceutical companies are no longer involved in this field. In the course of the presentation, I will provide a brief overview on NAICONS’ history, its technology platform, its business model and the approaches to discovery new bioactive molecules. I will also report some recent examples on new chemical classes of bioactive molecules and how they were discovered.

Coffee and cake will be served

We have three additional speakers planned – titles and abstracts will follow later, but please mark the dates in your calendar already now:

  • Professor Nadine Ziemert, University of Tübingen, Tuesday 12th of November
  • Professor Lone Gram, Technical University of Denmark, Tuesday 10th of December
  • Associate Professor Mikael Lenz Strube, Technical University of Denmark, Tuesday 10th of December

We hope to see all of you,

Andreas Schramm and Thomas Tørring
